Experiment highlights

Put the clear plastic recording cup in place,
disengage the stopper, and gently lower the needle.

Move your mouth as close as possible to the horn and
record your song or message in a loud, clear voice.
The provided cup can record about 50 seconds of sound.

How does the phonograph record and playback sound?

Recording:
When you speak at the horn, your voice causes tiny vibrations.
Those vibrations are passed on to the needle, which cuts sound grooves into the cup in waves.

Playback:
Playback is the opposite: the waves of the grooves cause the needle to vibrate.
The needle vibrations are passed on to a diaphragm, and you hear sound from the horn.
